The first right-hand drive Mazda CX-7 went down the production line in Japan earlier this month. The vehicle is destined for Australia which will be the first right-hand drive market to receive this exciting new SUV crossover.

The vehicles will now begin their journey from Hiroshima, where Mazda Corporation is based, to various ports in Australia.

The much anticipated CX-7 has already been met with international acclaim. Priced under $50,000 and on sale in Australia from November, the CX-7 is expected to capture Australian drivers’ hearts.

Motor show visitors in Sydney will get a sneak peek of a right-hand-drive CX-7, with the crossover SUV starring with the Mazda Kabura concept car on the Mazda stand at the Australian International Motor Show from 26 October.

The CX-7 is powered by Mazda’s turbocharged and intercooled 2.3-liter four-cylinder direct-injection engine (MZR 2.3 DISI) that also powers the Mazda6 MPS and Mazda3 MPS.

Mating to a six-speed automatic gearbox, the CX-7 produces an impressive 175 kW while torque peaks at 350Nm at just 2500rpm.

Using the innovative MX-Crossport concept shown at the 2006 Melbourne Motor Show for inspiration, the chief designer mapped out the CX-7 with ample space for five occupants. The rear seat not only carries three passengers in comfort, it also splits and folds 60:40 to increase cargo capacity and versatility.

The CX-7’s safety credentials will also be class-leading with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), traction control and ABS anti-lock brakes part of the package. It will also come standard with dual front, front side and head protecting curtain airbags (six in total).

In recent US Government National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA) tests the CX-7 achieved the highest possible rating, five stars, in both frontal and side-impact crash tests.

Creature comforts are not overlooked with options such as leather seats, BOSE sound system, MP3 and iPod capability, along with a host of other luxuries available.

“We are very excited to see the first Australian CX-7 off the line. As the first right hand drive market in the world to receive this vehicle we believe that this will be an important addition to the Mazda Australia range,” Mazda Australia managing director, Mr Doug Dickson, said.
