BMW today announced the price of the most comprehensively equipped 7 Series model ever offered in Australia.

The new BMW 760Li, which is available exclusively in long wheel-base form, will be priced at $386,000*. As well as its very high level of standard equipment, a comprehensive no-cost option program is included to ensure each car is tailored specifically to customer requirements.

The German brand’s new flagship replaces the M6 Convertible as its most expensive model and is the first BMW to feature an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW dealers have begun taking orders and the first customer deliveries are expected prior to Christmas.

“The combination of twelve cylinders and the new eight-speed automatic transmission ensures a maximum of sophistication, refinement and exclusivity in the luxury segment,” says Stavros Yallouridis, managing director of BMW Group Australia.

“The 760Li is the most comprehensively equipped BMW ever offered in Australia. In addition, our no-cost option program will ensure the car is perfectly tailored to the exacting requirements of our V12 customers,” he says.

The new flagship model will join the existing BMW 7 Series range, which currently includes the 730d, 740i, 740Li, 750i and 750Li.

In the face of difficult economic times Australian customers responded favourably to the arrival earlier this year of the new BMW 7 Series. Sales of the BMW flagship increased 70 per cent to 190 units so far this year. The 7 Series is currently the market leader in its segment accounting for almost 40 per cent of all sales in 2009.

The BMW 760Li features a newly developed all-aluminium V12 engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology (with two co-ordinated chargers), High Precision Injection and infinitely variable Double-Vanos camshaft control. At just under six litres of capacity (5,972 cc), the engine develops 400 kW of power and 750 Newton metres of torque from 1,500 rpm. The luxury saloon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

Despite seemingly inexhaustible power reserves, the efficiency of the 760Li is unmatched in this vehicle segment. The combined fuel consumption rating (EU5) is 13.0 litres per 100 km (303 g/km CO2). These fuel efficiency and emission values lead the world in the segment of 12-cylinder luxury saloons.

The new twelve-cylinder BMW 760Li incorporates important fuel saving and emissions-reducing features from the BMW EfficientDynamics development strategy including Brake Energy Regeneration, with a corresponding display on the instrument panel, demand-based water pumps as well as a flow-controlled oil pump. The result is a 4.4 per cent reduction in fuel consumption compared to the predecessor model, despite a significant increase in performance. CO2 emissions drop by eight per cent.

Standard equipment

The new BMW 760Li is the most comprehensively equipped BMW ever offered in Australia. Standard features, over and above the already well equipped BMW 750Li, include: 20-inch double-spoke light-alloy wheels, Integral Active Steering (which can turn the rear wheels up to three degrees for increased manoeuvrability at lower speeds and increased stability at higher speeds), active front seats, leather finished instrument panel, ceramic surround for controls, fine-wood inlay leather steering wheel, massage function in the rear-seat backrest, BMW Individual rear-seat reading lights, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Change Warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, alcantara headliner, BMW Individual full ‘Merino’ leather trim and 8-speed automatic transmission.

In addition to the extremely high level of standard specification, BMW 760Li customers can also select from a list of additional features which are available at no added cost. The list includes items such as a sport leather steering wheel, 19-inch or 20-inch BMW Individual light allow wheels, M Sport Package, BMW Individual paintwork and selection of interior trims.

As well as the regular non-metallic and metallic paint range, 760Li buyers can select – at no extra cost – BMW Individual paint colours including Brilliant White metallic, Ontario Gold metallic, Azurite Black metallic, Citrin Black metallic, Ruby Black metallic and Moonstone metallic.

BMW Individual full leather trim ‘Merino’ is standard in the 760Li and is available – at no extra cost - in the following colours: Platinum, Amaro Brown, Champagne, Silk Grey, Graphite and Cohiba Brown.

Standard interior trim is fine-wood trim burled walnut with inlays and can be ordered – at no extra cost – with fine-wood trim ash anthracite, BMW Individual fine-wood trim Sycamore (red brown dark), BMW Individual fine-wood trim Satin walnut (honey brown) and BMW Individual Piano finish (black with intarsia).

Other standard features of the BMW 760Li include, but are not limited to, BMW Night Vision with pedestrian detection, rear-seat entertainment Professional, Side view (which removes the danger from pulling out at junctions), heated and ventilated electrically adjustable rear seats, sunblinds for the rear and rear side windows, Dynamic Drive (which reduces the rolling caused by centrifugal forces when cornering for greater responsiveness, neutral steering and smoother weight transfers) and HiFi system Professional with Dirac Live technology including 16 high-performance speakers, 600-watt nine-channel amplifier and high precision frequency splitters.

Rear passengers in the BMW 760Li are better entertained than in any other vehicle in this class, with the standard fitment of two 9.2-inch screens. As a comparison, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers two 8-inch screens; the Audi A8 offers two 7-inch screens and the Lexus LS just one 9-inch screen. The standard rear-seat entertainment system Professional in the 760Li also offers more entertainment options for back-seat passengers than any other luxury car. The system boasts a second fully independent navigation system, and offers access to all the media sources available in the vehicle including telephone, TV, and the music library. It can also be used with a laptop, CD/DVD, iPod and PlayStation.

Background

This is the fourth time that a twelve-cylinder power unit marks the top end of the engine portfolio featured in the BMW 7 Series. And indeed, every new generation has further reinforced BMW’s position as the leading manufacturer of luxury performance saloons.

A BMW 7 Series with a twelve-cylinder power unit stands for exclusivity, supremacy and, not least, genuine innovation, the top-of-the-range engines providing the highest standard also on account of the maximum demands they are expected to meet right from the start in the development process.

BMW’s outstanding competence in the development and production of twelve-cylinder power units is based on a long tradition extending all the way back to the year 1925 when the company for the first time hit the headlines by building an aircraft engine with twelve cylinders. Back then BMW’s V12 developed maximum output of 750 hp, with two BMW twelve-cylinders powering the Dornier Wal seaplane just five years later in its record flight across the Atlantic.

In the second half of the 20th century BMW became the pioneer in introducing the twelve-cylinder in the most outstanding luxury cars. The BMW 750i launched in 1987, for example, was the first German twelve-cylinder saloon after the war. In the years to follow a long story of success in motorsport likewise contributed to the exceptional reputation of BMW’s twelve-cylinders. The BMW V12 LMR, for example, dominated the racing scene right from the start in its very first race in 1999, the 12 Hours of Sebring, and in the same season clinched overall victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
