Daimler-Benz AG has decided to go ahead with development of the Mercedes-Benz Maybach — the company's premium exclusive limousine.
The Maybach will be built at Sindelfingen, Stuttgart with an expected volume of around 2,000 units per annum and will be available in the new century.
Jurgen Schrempp, Chairman of Daimler-Benz said: "By deciding to build the Maybach, we are once again underlining our claim of representing the absolute "creme-de-la-creme" in all segments.
The Mercedes-Benz Maybach will be a masterwork of automotive technology, setting ultimate standards in luxury features and engineering."
The Mercedes-Benz Maybach continues the long-standing Daimler Benz tradition of manufacturing Mercedes-Benz vehicles for a very small, exclusive and select customer group. The most significant markets for the Maybach will be Europe, North America and Asia, including Japan.
The new model range is named after designer Wilhelm Maybach (1846-
1929), a long-time companion of Gottlieb Daimler and one of Germany's
most famous automobile designers, who was accepted into the Hall of
Fame for his performance and achievements.
Like the Maybach Zeppelin of the 1 930s; and the Mercedes-Benz 600
Pullmann until 1981, when its production ceased; the Mercedes-Benz
Maybach will be individually built for each customer in a very small and
very exclusive series.
Mercedes-Benz confirmed that the Maybach will have absolutely no effect whatsoever on the top market position of the S-class: The Mercedes-Benz Maybach will not compete with the company's other model ranges, but complement the existing Mercedes range, adding a fascinating vehicle and opening an additonal market segment and appealing to a very special group of customers.
Concept car pointed the way
The Maybach concept was first shown at last October's Tokyo Motor Show.
Daimler-Benz hinted at the technology and equipment that may be expected from tomorrow's luxury limousines. The car with an overall length of 5.77 metres demonstrated the art of automotive construction in perfection. The Mercedes-Benz Maybach combines the tradition of large chauffeur-driven limousines with the innovative technology of future Mercedes models in the luxury bracket.
As a result, the design brief was particularly ambitious: this limousine should lay down future standards of comfort and aesthetic appeal and represent a new high point in automotive engineering.
Even at first glance, the Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept represents a grand-scale departure from the familiar in order to provide an ambience of exclusive comfort. Its clear-cut design owes much to the careful balance of tradition and avant-garde while characterising it clearly as a member of the Mercedes family. Two-tone paintwork, high-grade metals and a host of high-tech features set the scene. The designers have come up with soft, elongated lines which are simple yet at the same time elegant, giving the car a flowing silhouette designed to convey a majestic impression as it passes by.
Luminescent detail
A unique feature is the luminescent strip at waist height. This innovative luminescent structure stretches the entre vehicle body optically and creates a visual horizontal movement which conveys the feel of serene cruising. This light effect also underlines the limousine's contours as well as its exclusive character.
The front end of the Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept incorporated the traditional radiator mask and also features discreet-looking high-tech headlamp units providing a seamless continuation of the band of light. They are also groundbreaking at the same time, consisting of several reflector units for different driving conditions that may include urban driving, trips in bad weather or highway journeys.
An electronic system controls the headlights and automatically adjusts light distribution to prevailing driving conditions. The tail lamps round off the dynamic rear end harmoniously and provide a graceful closing statement for this large car. They utilise extremely fast-reaching LED technology adapting their luminous intensity to the ambient light.
The glass-domed passenger compartment, which allows rear seat occupants to view the countryside from an unusual perspective, is particularly striking. Innovative technology enables the passengers to control the amount of light that penetrates. The electrochromatic glass roof is tint-adjustable at the push of a button, allowing less light to penetrate and thereby creating a pleasant, diffused glow.
Exclusive interior style
The rear passengers enjoy a spacious compartment lavisly appointed with cream-coloured leather trim, wood, smoked glass and high-grade metals. Customers will, of course, be able to determine the equipment details themselves. Their individual taste and preferences will thus ensure that each Mercedes-Benz Maybach will be quite unique.
Two full-width seats with extendible thigh support and footrests allow passengers to adopt a reclining position similar to that afforded by first- class airline seats. An elegantly designed bar for cold and hot beverages is fitted between the front seats, while the rear armrest contains a cool box for champagne and fine spirits. For the convenience of smokers, a humidor made from burr walnut is provided between the rear seats.
A make-up box as well as a business box consisting of a notebook and high-quality writing implements are integrated into the backrests of the front seats. The luggage compartment contains two colour-coordinated, high-quality golf sets. In addition, a mobile computer is provided. There are hardly any limitations to the equipment and accessories customers may specify.
On-board entertainment
The Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept offers first-rate audio and video entertainment systems incorporating a radio and television tuner, compact disc changer, mini-disc player and state-of-the-art video equipment. A 20-inch LCD television screen, not even five centimetres deep, is fifed below the glass roof and can be moved out of the way when not required. It allows rear-seat occupants either to enjoy video and television programs without any interference or to surf the internet en route.
Rear-seat occupants are able to control the vast array of functions via two small monitors featuring so-called touch pads. This allows passengers to work the complex technology intuitively and easily at their fingertips. In addition, three stand-alone telephone systems are provided on board.
Lightweight construction
For the body of their concept limousine, Daimler engineers propose a novel hybrid construction using fibre-composite materials, aluminium and magnesium. This allows significant weight savings.
The proposed power plant is a comfortable and torquey V12 engine with a capacity of almost six litres, The magnesium/aluminium unit boasting three-valve technology and dual ignition is very light and surprisingly fuel-efficient. Cylinder cut-off and exhaust gas after-treatment guarantee environmentally compatible emission values.
