Volkswagen set a challenge in May for a Lupo 3L TDi to travel around the world using less than 1,000 litres of fuel. Eighty days later and the trip has been completed with 207 litres of fuel to spare.
The Lupo drove across Australia in June as part of its journey from Perth to Sydney averaging 2.5l/100km for its Australian leg.
The Lupo finished its journey at the home of Volkswagen in Germany, Wolfsburg, welcomed by a parade of hundreds of Lupos.
The Lupo travelled 33,333 kms, consuming only 793 litres of fuel - an average consumption of 2.38 litres/100 kilometres. The average speed for the trip was 85.6km/h.
The electronic measuring equipment in the vehicle registered a lowest consumption of 1.99 litres and a highest of 2.8 litres over 100 kilometres on the daily legs of between 123 and 770 kilometres.
Dr Martin Winterkorn, member of the Group board of management with responsibility for research and development said this achievement was made possible through the leading edge technology of the Lupo 3L TDi.
"It is the result of the innovation and creativity of our engineers. The Lupo 3L TDi combines high-tech with absolute reliability; our mechanics had nothing to do during the 80 days, apart from one oil change," Dr Winterkorn said.
The Lupo traveled across five continents passing through cities such as Paris, Johannesburg, Bangkok, Mexico, New York, Madrid, Marrakech and Oslo. The Lupo started in Berlin and went to the French capital city, then to South Africa, across Thailand and Australia, and later North America. The Lupo returned to Europe via North Africa.
