Bigger Engine For New Look Pyzar

15 September, 1999

Daihatsu’s Pyzar, flaunting a new look front and rear end and more powerful 1.6 litre, 4-cylinder, 16-valve, electronic fuel injected engine will shortly be arriving in Daihatsu dealerships across Australia.

The very practical and versatile Daihatsu Pyzar was launched in Australia in February 1997 as a cleverly designed people mover that offered a high level of comfort, convenience and safety at a sub $18,000 price tag.

The new look Pyzar which will arrive in Australia later this month, will retain all of the safety and convenience features of its predecessor, including duel SRS airbags, front seatbelt pretentioners, full cloth trim, central locking, remote electric rear vision mirrors, power steering and four speaker AM/FM radio cassette player.

However, under the bonnet the new Pyzar will offer a bigger 1.6 litre engine, which produces more power (67 kW @ 6,000 rpm) and more torque (126 Nm @ 3,600 rpm).

On the outside the new Pyzar has undergone a number of changes to both the front and rear end design, giving it a more modern and distinctive styling. The most noticeable of these changes are the front headlights, which incorporates a clear plastic lens rather than refractive glass lens. The change to a clear plastic lens offers several advantages.

The biggest advantages are safety related. The new headlights rely on a chrome reflective plate at the back of the assembly to direct light, rather than a refractive glass lens. This means, that unlike the refractive glass lens, if the lens is cracked or broken then the direction and intensity of the light is not altered.

NOTE: In the instance where a refractive glass lens is either damaged or cracked it can alter the angle and intensity of the light beam which, in turn can reduce the driver’s night vision and/or blind oncoming traffic.

Additional changes to the front end design of the Pyzar include a distinctive new chrome grille, larger impact absorbing front bumper and front air dam.

Changes to the rear of the vehicle include a new design rear combination lens and rear bumper.

The new model Pyzar also picks up a large protection moulding, that runs right around the vehicle to prevent mirror scratches and dents from the likes of shopping trolleys.

Despite the number of enhancements the good news is that the price of the new Pyzar will remain at $17,990 for the 5-speed manual and $19,490 for the 4-speed automatic.
