Mercedes-Benz is introducing a new high technology,
high-efficiency supercharged engine that is destined to play a major role in
its Australian operations.
The new E 200 Kompressor is the first Mercedes
model here to host the boosted 120kW four-cylinder powerplant. It brings a fresh
perspective to the award-winning E-class range, which now includes seven variants
including the revered E 55 AMG.
The value-oriented E 200K Classic becomes the
entry-level for Mercedes' E-class range priced at $79,500.
The Mercedes E-class is Australia's most popular
executive sedan with around 8,500 sold here since its 1996 launch and is the
current holder of the NRMA/RACV Best Luxury Car title.
Late last year it was given fresh impetus with
a significant facelift involving the introduction of more than 1800 new components.
Among these were the introduction of a new 'tip-shift'
automatic transmission, standard windowbags and ESP anti-skid control.
"The E 200K is a reaffirmation of the value
factor in our popular E-class range," said Roman Fischer, Managing Director,
Mercedes-Benz Passenger Cars in Australia.
"The E-class is winning industry awards
every year as well as the sales contest in the upper luxury passenger car market.
It is a mainstay of our local sales volume and has enjoyed unrivalled success
worldwide. We believe the E200 Kompressor is the answer for customers who want
full-size prestige and the hallmarks of the Mercedes-Benz brand at a price previously
unavailable in this product line."
The four-cylinder unit, which Mercedes premiered
only recently in Europe in the new C-class produces 120 kW and replaces the
previous two-litre, 4-cylinder engine featured in the C 200.
The new supercharged powerplant develops its
maximum torque of 230 Newton metres from just 2500 rpm and surpasses the corresponding
figure for the naturally aspirated engine by around 21 per cent.
As the new engine keeps its maximum torque constant
across a wide rev band from 2500 to 4800 rpm, the new E 200K has abundant power
for quick sprints.
Despite the higher output and remarkable performance
figures, the new E 200K consumes only 9.6 litres for the sedan per 100 kms (NEDC
figures).
New features are currently being introduced to
the Mercedes-Benz E-class to further enhance driving comfort.
Manual longitudinal and height adjustment of
the steering wheel is now standard.
The current speed will also be displayed in the
instrument cluster in digital form.
The (optional) LINGUATRONIC voice control system
now also extends to the audio functions on board the E-class. The driver can
now give simple voice commands for station selection, title search in tape or
CD mode and other functions.
It is now possible to open the (optional) tilt/slide
sunroof on the E-class fully simply by pushing the button a little longer.

Markets, model concept and equipment
Best-Seller Raises the Stakes
The Mercedes E-class is the world number one
in its segment.
Almost 24 per cent of all Mercedes passenger
cars manufactured sport an "E" in their model badge. So, from the
business point of view too, the E-class is an integral part of the world's oldest
vehicle brand. This was further reinforced when the station wagon, which now
accounts for about five per cent of Australian E-Class orders, was unveiled
in 1996.
Value for money strategy
The worldwide market popularity and strong customer
loyalty is testimony to Mercedes-Benz's rigorous value for
money strategy.
Three Lines
Three lines - Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde
- create their own
distinctive accents in the E-class. With different
design, specification and engineering features each one has a different ambience.
- Classic: the basic model in the E-class
is a fully equipped Mercedes-Benz in which unostentatious elegance is matched
to typical Mercedes practicality. A poplar wood trim is used in the interior and
seats feature leather inserts.
- Elegance: chrome trim on the door handles
and rub rails, combined with alloy rims, lend a particularly refined appearance
to this line, while a combination of burl walnut and leather trim on the steering
wheel and shift lever creates an elegant ambience inside the car.
- Avantgarde: this model version cuts
a particularly sporty figure with a special radiator grille, grey glass for
the reversing lights, sports-lowered suspension, 16-inch alloy rims and blue-tinted windows. Inside, the wood trim is anthracite
bird's eye maple (or no-charge option brown wood) with grey instrumentation.

Standard Specification boosted
Typical Mercedes quality features like safety,
environment-friendliness, comfort, build quality, reliability and retained value
are a common thread in all the E-class models.
Many new standard specifications became effective
with the model update, late last year.
The many new standard features offer drivers
more safety, further enhanced comfort, even greater economy and, above
all, more driver satisfaction. In total Mercedes-Benz added over two dozen useful
features to the standard E-class specification. Examples of the additional standard
specification in the Classic line are:
- Exterior mirror housings incorporating turn
signals
- Wide 205/65 tyres (basic equipment for sedan)
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
- Five-speed automatic transmission with one-touch
tip-shift and cruise control with speed-limiter
- Luggage net in boot (sedan)
- Inside light in tailgate (station wagon) or
boot lid
- Load compartment cover with new convenient
operation (wagon)
- Multi-function steering wheel
- Body-coloured side skirts
- Power adjustment for driver's and front passenger's
seat (height and backrest)
- Storage compartment in cargo floor, lockable
(station wagon)
- Windowbags and rear side bags
- Central display unit in speedometer
- Courtesy lights in the doors
- Upgraded audio system including Becker radio
Design
Dynamic styling
- Front end lowered by 15 - 20 millimetres
- Seamlessly integrated bumper trim
- Body-coloured side skirts and door handles
The E-class designers did not shrink from making
sweeping facelift changes. They lowered the front end with the distinctive twin-headlamp
face, reducing the height of the wings by 20 millimetres and of the headlamps
by 15 millimetres.
These measures, which are unusually far-reaching
for a model update, create a more dynamic and purposeful appearance.
In keeping with these changes the E-Class has
received a new bumper trim at the front and rear. This feature accentuates body
harmony and also adds a dash of sportiness. The air intake and fog lamps integrated
in the lower part of the bumper trim have been redesigned.
Lower down on the bumper trim are discreet, body-coloured
spoilers. The new multi-part rub rail is easier to replace in the event of minor
damage. The radiator grille for the Classic and Elegance lines has been remodeled
and now has fewer vertical ribs. All these measures have produced an
E-Class face which is closely attuned to the
current brand image. At the same time they leave intact the trailblazing original
design which - as always at Mercedes-Benz - is geared to the long term.
The unusually favorable Cd value of the previous
E-class models (0.27) has been retained.
Body-coloured side skirts and door handles
Further factors in the design update are the
body-coloured side skirts and door handles, which in the case of the Elegance
and Avantgarde lines sport a chrome strip. The rear lights too have a new, contemporary
styling and the glass has a new, ribbed surface.
Six petrol engines
As well as a new CDI diesel and 2-litre kompressor
engines, the power units also include the proven state-of-the-art V6 and V8
petrol engines with displacements from 2.4 to 5.5 litres. The V6 and V8 units
are members of the new Mercedes V-engine generation and feature innovations
like three valves per cylinder, twin ignition and light-alloy cylinder liners.

One-touch automatic transmission
The new one-touch control for the five-speed
automatic transmission offers more convenient operation. The driver now simply
chooses between the selector positions P – R – N – D.
In position D, all five forward speeds can be
selected by gently nudging the selector lever to the left or right. The principle
is that a nudge to
the left gives a downshift, a nudge to the right
an upshift.
Electronics
High-tech from the S-Class
- Multi-function steering wheel
- High-speed fibre-optic cable
The innovative operation and display concept
for the E-Class includes a new-design instrument cluster with high-detail dot
matrix central display unit. Information can be called up using the new multi-function
steering wheel with four illuminated buttons. The lower button on the left-hand
side, the "display" button, can be used to access basic menus, including:
- Odometer
- Audio systems
- Trip computer
- Fault memory with stored error messages
- Individual settings
In each of these basic menus, the driver can
scroll forwards or back between the various detailed displays using the scroll
buttons. The multi-function steering wheel also has buttons for activating the
car phone, the optional LINGUATRONIC voice control system and for volume control.
Data communication by light pulses
The electronic data network on board the E-Class
comprises two CAN data bus systems for the interior and the engine. The data
buses maintain permanent communication between all the electric and electronic
components in the vehicle so that any control unit is capable of reacting to
data from any sensor. In practical terms, this makes it possible to implement
with relative ease a wide range of new vehicle functions covering safety, comfort
and environmental compatibility.
In addition to this, the components of the audio
and telematics systems are networked by means of a fibre-optic data bus. This
"Domestic Digital Bus" – or "D2B" for short – uses fibre-optic
cables made of plastic instead of copper wiring. The cables can transmit over
5.6 million bits per second - 60 times faster than copper.
Safety
Windowbag and ESP
- Windowbags and front and rear sidebags fitted as standard
- Electronic Stability Program (ESP) as standard
The latest findings of the Mercedes accident
researchers showed that side impacts now pose the greatest risk of injury and
have influenced the development of the restraint systems for the E-class. With
standard-fitted sidebags in the front doors, Mercedes-Benz has been making a
major contribution to occupant protection for some years.
However, the accident statistics also reveal
a need for additional head protection. Windowbags, like the sidebags in the
front and rear doors, are standard safety equipment on the E-Class.
The windowbag measures 2000 millimetres in length
by 350 millimetres by 60 millimetres and consists of nine chambers with a total
volume of around 12 litres. It is attached to the inside of the roof frame,
running along the side of the frame from the rear to the front pillar.
In the event of an accident it deploys like a
shielding curtain between the A-pillar and the C-pillar in the space of just
25 milliseconds, providing protection and significantly reducing the risk of
head injuries for both the front and the rear passengers.
This additional protection, particularly in the
thorax region, is on top of that already provided by the sidebags in the doors.
ESP and Brake Assist
High-performance electronic active-safety systems
in Mercedes passenger cars have been making the roads a safer place for many
years. The E-class is equipped as standard with the world's leading active safety
system: the latest-generation award-winning Electronic Stability Program (ESP).
ESP uses a variety of sensor signals to identify dangerous situations earlier
and faster than even the most seasoned driver.
The system can then stabilize the vehicle by
means of precisely modulated braking impulses and/or a reduction in engine power.
ESP also incorporates other dynamic handling control systems such as ABS, Brake-Assist
and ASR.
