Toyota’s HiLux, the world’s top-volume one-tonne utility has passed another production milestone, with 11 million now on the world’s roads.
HiLux sales in Australia recently passed the 350,000 mark.
Combined two and four-wheel drive sales make HiLux Australia’s most popular pick-up.
Toyota launched HiLux in Japan and Australia in 1968 and the vehicle is now in its sixth generation.
The Toyota workhorse is used worldwide - from mines in Australia to cattle ranches in South America.
Production of HiLux to the end of 2000 was 9,441,840 vehicles in Japan and 1,388,531 vehicles in other plants, for a total HiLux production of 10,830,371 vehicles.
Annual production of some 345,000 units saw HiLux production pass the 11 million mark by June 30.
The first Toyota HiLux model had a 1.5-litre engine, which delivered 55 kiloWatts of power.
HiLux is offered in Australia with the choice of four EFI-equipped engines - 2.0 litre petrol, 2.7 litre petrol, 3.0 litre diesel and 3.0 litre Turbo-diesel.
HiLux’ EFI-equipped single overhead camshaft 2.0-litre engine delivers 80kW of power at 5200rpm and 166Nm of torque at 2800rpm.
The large petrol engine is a 2.7 litre EFI-equipped Twin Cam multi-valve power plant.
It delivers 108kW of power and 235Nm of torque - to make HiLux one of the country's most powerful four-cylinder utilities.
The HiLux single overhead camshaft diesel displaces 3.0-litres and delivers 71kW of power at 4000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 2600rpm.
Turbo-diesel HiLux delivers 85kW at 3600rpm and 315Nm of torque at 2000rpm.
It has twin counter-rotating balance shafts, to minimise noise and vibration.
Australian buyers can now choose between two drivelines, three cabins (Single Cab, Extra Cab and Dual Cab), pick-up or Cab/Chassis body and two equipment grades.
Recent additions to the HiLux range include four HiLux Turbo-diesel models, all in four-wheel-drive.
They are: Single Cab Pick-up, Single Cab Cab/Chassis, Double Cab Pick-up and recreational Double Cab SR5 Pick-up.
HiLux is the longest continuous-selling Cab/Chassis Pick-up in Australia and has earned its reputation through unbreakable design, reliability and high resale value.
