Subaru is exhibiting two concept cars at the 37th Tokyo Motor Show, starting today, 22 October.
Both concepts have been created by Subaru's design team headed by Advanced Design's Chief Designer, Andreas Zapatinas, and reflect the brand's next generation trends.
The Subaru B9 Scrambler uses a new type of powertrain called Sequential Series Hybrid Electric Vehicle (SSHEV), a fusion of the brand's trademark Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the latest HEV technologies.
The SSHEV high-performance motor system drives the car at the most frequently-used speed ranges (up to around 80 km/h). It produces smooth acceleration, good fuel efficiency and superb environmental performance.
The B9 Scrambler has run-flat tyres and features variable-height air suspension that can adjust minimum ground clearance from 150 mm to 200 mm. It also has an auto-levelling function.
The Subaru R1E features a 2 + 2 layout. An electric vehicle, it uses a high-performance battery and advanced power control technology that also places environmental considerations at the forefront.
Shorter than typical Japanese minicars, the R1E offers easy parking and flexibility, courtesy of its 2 + 2 cabin.
Power is from a light, compact, brushless motor with high output and excellent reliability.
The manganese lithium-ion battery features very high energy density. The battery can be charged by taking power from single-phase 22V AC outlets traditionally used for home air conditioners in Japan.
