Toyotas make up five of the top 15 best used car buys in Australia, according to a survey published by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria.
The RACV's first annual "Best Used Car Buys" lists second-hand cars up to 10 years old in five price categories.
In the under $10,000 category, the 1996-97 Toyota Starlet Life three-door and the 1990-92 Camry range comprised two of the three models nominated as the best picks for budget shoppers.
The Starlet was described by the RACV as a "top-quality choice", while it said the Camry was "generally a very safe bet as a used car buy."
In the $10-I 5,000 category, the survey picked the 1991-96 Toyota Corolla range, describing the car as "bulletproof."
Toyota Taragos built between 1990 and 1993 were amongst the best used vehicle buys in the $20-25,000 category.
The RACV praised the Taragos' reliability, comfort, safety and handling.
Toyota also topped the $25-30,000 used vehicle bracket with its 1992-94 LandCruiser 80, the RACV saying "it is hard to go past the robust, reliable and roomy big Toyota."
The RACV's criteria for deciding the best used car buys included value for money, reliability, safety, repair and running costs, and resale value.
How the car drives, its comfort, space, equipment and design features were also considered.
Prices and expected kilometres were sourced from the respected Glass's Guide.
Information on the reliability and running costs were obtained from the databases of the RACV and its partner in the study, the NRMA.
